It's located on the south side of the island and takes about 15-20 minutes to get there from Cape Panwa or Chalong Pier by a long tail or passenger boat. Ban Prakong is one of the home stay facilities offered on the island. The service is guided and supported by the provincial Tourism and Sports Office and the Austrian Hilfswerk Foundation which stepped in to support integrated community development. They encourage community preparedness in welcoming and receiving tourists, by opening home stay services showcasing local lifestyles. They have many things to offer as Dolkareem Songmuang, an owner of a Home Stay facility explained: ' You can take a stroll, appreciate mountain views, look at the coral reefs at Coral or El islands or enjoy the village by going out fishing with local fishermen.' At present 15 fishing families join in the programs and 3 homes have been opened to accept visitors with more to come in the near future. They offer a package of one night and two days accommodation with 3 meals plus tour of their own daily life, going out fishing. Both hosts and guests can then come back with fish or marine lives which are tasty meals for all. Villagers on Lone island still maintain traditional living by fishing and farming. Apart from that, the guests can be taken on a boat ride to appreciate different types of shallow water coral reefs on the island's south side which are still in fertile conditions. They are clearly seen from aboard a boat. A highlight for our trip of that day was fishing without bait. The villagers show off their local wisdom, using just bare string and you get fish like this. Villagers say they can take you out to catch fish without nets at night. So it must be very rich. The Chief of provincial Tourism and Sports Office Promchote Trivate said villagers are concerned that big tourism businesses exploit the sea's local resources, so they got together and asked that big businesses take tourists further out in the ocean, while villagers just fish on the coastal areas for eco--tourism. They then introduced Homestay packages using their own homes with local fishing trips. Promoting the small fishing village of Koh Lone as an eco-tourism site, not only supports the villagers' income, but also promotes their awareness in conserving natural resources so that it can be sustainably relied on and feed them for generations to come.

Staff of the Racha Resort and Ban Raya Resort plus foreign tourists yesterday evening tried to help a herd of whales apparently identified as False Killer Whales which came ashore at Batoh Bay at Racha Yai Island. They put some of them on a trailer to another side of the island for first aid and helped them swim back to the deep sea. The herd of whales were spotted at around 6pm yesterday by villagers. Over 30 whales came ashore due to big waves and winds. Seeing that the whales could not swim back themselves, villagers then notified hotels. 20 of them swam back to sea safely, while one died on the beach and 10 of them were carried to a calmer beach. It took marine biologists and locals over 3 hours to help and transfer them. One however was injured and was put in a rubber boat to release in deeper water. A marine biologist from Phuket Marine Biological Centre, Kongkiat Kittipatanawong, said this is the first time that a large number of such whales have come ashore here. He suspected that the leader of the group must have misled them to shore. The big waves prevented them from turning back to sea. The biologist will still keep watch this morning, to ensure all of them return to the deep sea, while the dead whale would be sent for an autopsy. |
