Hong Kong / China excursion

Hi, I have a work visa for Hong Kong, but would I be able to cross the border into China proper or do i need to apply for a new Chinese visa?And is this the case if I only want to visit China for the weekend? I have a British passport if that makes a... ...full story at Lonely Planet
