Visa application to China(Xinjiang)

I am planning to enter China from Pakistan via the Karakoram Highway. I would like to apply for a 3 month visa to China. Should I apply for it at the Chinese embassy in Islamabad or can I apply for it upon entry at the Chinese border? Thanks! ...full story at Virtual Tourist
